In some societies, people with disabilities are expected to stay home, out of sight. Albania being a very hospitable culture is open to people with disabilities, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t prejudices among some people. Recently a blind man told me he was yelled at by a stranger and told that he should stay at home. With this attitude surfacing at times, the lack of sufficient financial assistance, and the continue lack of infrastructure for people with disabilities, it makes it hard for the visually impaired to get out and to feel a part of society. These problems are being addressed and changes are being made even if slowly. In the mean time, community is important for those with disabilities. In an effort to help create community, opportunities for interaction and spiritual encouragement, Light for the Blind has several local meetings throughout Albania. These meetings are important and very crucial are the leaders in those cities to take up the effort. Being visually impaired is difficult, but it is better when we are together helping one anther. Pray for the continued development of this ministry throughout Albania. Pray for leaders and churches that can take up the torch and minister to the visually impaired and their families.
